Town builders and Land Stewards.

We describe Arcadia as "Town Builders and Land Stewards." We believe that town building and land stewardship are intrinsically linked. If we don't build compact walkable towns, low-density suburbanization will continue to consume our open spaces. If we don't preserve our most important natural lands, suburbanization will continue uncontrolled without edge or center.

Town Building:
Arcadia's approach to town building has been influenced by the New Urbanism and the conservation development movement. New Urbanism is a movement that promotes compact, walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods as a positive alternative to low-density, automobile-oriented, single-use development. New Urbanism supports both the revitalization and expansion of existing centers as well as the creation of new neighborhoods. Conservation Development is an approach to suburban and rural development where the clustering of homes enables greater open space preservation.

Land Stewardship:
Open space lands are both ecological and human assets. Arcadia preserves open space in each of its communities so that natural habitats are preserved and human habitats are enhanced. The amount and configuration of open space is not a fixed formula; rather, the character of the land, the needs of the surrounding community, and the expectations of future residents all factor into a successful open space design.
